MY RIGHTS - BOOKMARK CONTEST

The Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted by the UN General Assembly on the 20th November 1989. To celebrate the adoption of the 1st legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rights – civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights – our school ran a bookmark contest for all students currently attending the 7th, 8th and 9thforms.

During either a Portuguese or an English class students were supposed to discuss the articles of the Convention and choose the one they liked the most. Then they had to write a sentence starting with “I’m a child and I have the right to” on the bookmark template provided by the school and decorate it at their discretion.

The bookmarks were judged for originality, neatness and spelling and the winning ones were unveiled on the 19th November. Two students were jointly awarded with the 1st prize and five with honourable mentions. Their bookmarks are going to be printed and distributed at our town’s annual pedagogical fair on the International Children’s Day (1st June 2013).

This activity was a wonderful opportunity for our students to deepen their knowledge of children’s rights and express their opinions in a creative way.

All participants have their work displayed in the school library. Don’t forget to show up and appreciate their work!
