Escola Secundária de Casquilhos

Escola Secundaria de Casquilhos is a state secondary school located in Barreiro, a growing town stationed on the bank of Tagus River, opposite Lisbon.

The school has a great amount of green space, with the peculiarity of having different buildings of classrooms spread over many hectares, so it doesn't have the traditional architecture of most schools in the country. It also has a privileged location since it is set on a plain, surrounded by a beautiful green recreation zone. The school community inludes 719 students distributed by 32 classes, from the 7th to the 12th grade, and 76 teachers.

The school environment is characterised by a healthy atmosphere among the different elements of the school community. Throughout the school year there are many activities whose goals go beyond the curricular ones, something which makes students evolve as citizens, feel integrated, develop their creativity and create a special bond with the school.

The School Board also promotes the integration of all new students, no matter their origin. Right now the school has a great diversity of races and cultures as it has students from around 20 different countries, from 4 continents: Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

All educational structures, the School Board, the School Council, the Pedagogic Board and the Students’ association, participate in school life.

Therefore, this project would be a great asset to develop the knowledge of different cultures and sensitize young people and all the other members of the school community to diversity and to the value of European cultures and languages. Through the use of new technologies, an important tool in today’s world, they would share ideas, opinions and experiences, being thus able to recognise individuality in a multicultural Europe, with different customs and values, and at the same time identify equality of rights and duties. Schools, as privileged settings of socialization, have a mission to promote equality of opportunities, educate for pluralism and equality between men and women and to contribute to the development of rewarding and balanced close relationships. The elimination of gender discrimination and, consequently, of intimate relationships marked by inequality and violence, is an essential part of human rights education. In fact, the promotion of the respect for individual rights and freedoms is absolutely crucial to grant people, no matter their gender, their full citizenship rights.
